Leopards in fight to keep Makwatta

Financially crippled AFC Leopards face a fight in their bid to retain free-scoring striker John Mark-Makwatta.

Leopards are already going through one of their most difficult times having lost  former skipper Rwandan Soter Kayumba, Dennis Shikhai and star midfielder Whyvonne  Isuza. The the last two having joined money bags Wazito FC.

And even before the dust could settle on their exit, club boss Dan Shikanda has added salt to injury noting that several clubs are aiming to prize the dependable Makwatta who has so far found the back of the net 12 times this season.

“Makwatta is one of our key players; what he has done for this club is remarkable, and we are determined to keep him at all costs.

“There are like  five teams that are interested in his services, but we are  telling him we are working on a sponsorship and soon all will be well,” said Shikanda.

Igwe who are currently seventh on the log parted ways with the head coach Casa Mbungo in late December due to unpaid salaries but the club boss believes there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

“We are trying to keep all the players that we believe have a role to play this season, and the ones who have left to join other clubs had already been told that their contracts would not be renewed.

He went on: “We are speaking to a number of sponsors and before the end of next month we expect someone to come on board but I want to urge the clubs fans to continue supporting the team because they are our main sponsors.”
