AFC Leopards midfielder Whyvonne Isuza has told his teammates to stay focused on their trip to Kakamega Homeboyz for their season-opening clash on Sunday.

Leopards are winless against Homeboyz in their last three Kenyan Premier League (KPL) meetings with the latter enjoying a perfect home record over their derby rivals.

“It is our first game which is expected to be tricky and so we have to handle it with care. We have had several friendly matches though the league is different from what we have had during the pre-season,” Isuza said.

Isuza who was part of Sebastien Migne’s Harambee Stars squad that was bundled out of CHAN by Tanzania, has indicated that his international exposure will boost his morale for the new season.

“It was so important for me as a player to be handed a call up in the national team for building self-confidence,” he added.

He has also expressed confidence in the newly acquired players even though he has not had much time with them due to international assignments with the national team.

I was away when the new players came in but all the same I’m confident that if they gel well with the rest of us we will have a good season,” he said.

On the other hand, Homeboyz head coach Nicolas Muyoti is confident that his boys are well prepared for the first game against Leopards.

“We have played friendly matches and I believe they have helped us to be ready for the season. We have done some signings to boost the squad and so all is well,” he added.

Muyoti who joined Homeboyz from Nzoia Sugar in February this year and helped the Kakamega based side to finish 7th last season a position he aims to improve on this season.

“Our target is to go higher than last season and so we are in good shape for the first game which I believe it is going to be so tough since Leopards is also a better side”, the former Leopards player said.

Homeboyz has bolstered its squad with signings including Vihiga United duo midfielder Steve Wakanya and striker Chris Masinza, defender Roy Waiswa from Sony Sugar, forward Kevin Omondi from Zoo FC, Nzoia Sugar duo midfielders Dennis Nandwa and Steve Etyang, left back Mahinga from Chemelil Sugar and striker Rony Omino from Sony Sugar.
