Leopards players stage go-slow over unpaid allowances

A crisis is brewing in AFC Leopards SC after players reportedly went on a go slow to protest non payment of match and transport allowances with allegations of disunity brewing among players, technical bench and the executive.

The team which trains at Nairobi’s Marist University College Training Ground in Karen is struggling to convince its playing unit to be patient as the club digs into other means of raising funds after exhausting its quota from sponsors.

Ingwe, which is under the sponsorship of a betting firm, has struggled to pay players winning and drawing allowances including last weekend’s barren stalemate with City Stars where each was expecting Ksh.2,500.

“Yes we had a grant from our sponsor to cater for smaller budgets though not enough to clear players allowances. The office has assured us that it’s looking for funds and plans are underway to clear the players,” club Team Manager, Joseph Milimu, confirmed.

According to the official, Ingwe is broke because the immediate former regime handed over office with no penny in the coffers meaning they have had to start from scratch.

“Currently we are struggling to put things in order. However, we have never missed a match because of financial constraints. Our players have never missed their salaries; they haven’t come to field hungry or lacked transportation to playing grounds,” the Team Manager stressed.

A senior Leopards player who pleaded anonymity said that the officials have remained mum over the matter.

“It’s even encouraging if we see them come and visit us and tell us what is happening because we have only been given allowances for 14 days and not been refunded the fare we use from our own pockets to and from training,” he complained.

“We have not been given anything after beating Kakamega Homeboyz in the GOtv Shield, Ushuru FC and also drawing Posta Rangers and City Stars in Kenya Premier League,” he claimed saying they were demoralised.

The club owes each player over Ksh.20,000 with the club forking Ksh 5,000 for each game they win, Ksh 3,000 for every match drawn away and Ksh.2,500 for a draw at home.

Club officials did not answer phone calls when contacted with Leopards facing Western Stima in a GOtv Shield clash on Saturday.
