Leopards ripe for trophies, says club legend Ambani

AFC Leopards former striker Fred Ambani is upbeat that the current crop of players under head coach Anthony Kimani are capable of mounting a league title challenge to bring to an end the stranglehold dominance of Gor Mahia.

According to Ambani, Leopards rich vein of form prior to the Covid-19 pandemic is a sign they are soon coming of age.

“Of late I have seen that the squad under coach Kimani has really improved. The wins they have recorded say it all and if indeed they maintain the winning mentality then I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

They have a promising head coach who has injected something positive and hunger in them,” he noted.

Ambani who also featured for Oserian FC reckons that time is ripe for the big cats to stamp their authority and make their perennial beatings in the hands of Gor a thing of the past.

“I want to say that it is disgusting to see Gor fly high past Leopards, for real. While playing for Leopards I can swear we never lost against them because it was like we took an oath that better we lose to another team but not Gor Mahia and it worked,” Ambani added.

The 1998 joint top scorer who netted 17 goals, one above his brother Boniface Ambani has also poked holes in the football leadership saying that it was unthinkable to give walkovers, contrary to recent happenings.

Chemelil Sugar and Sony Sugar FC gave walkovers in the ended campaign leading to the expulsion of the latter from the top division.

The Wazito FC assistant coach has also asked the Football Kenya Federation to bring sanity back to football.

“People must be serious and also focus on improving the standards of football in the country. Football is not about money but strategies, plan and structures,” he underscored.

Leopards are 12 times KPL champions, six behind their traditional rivals Gor Mahia who are likely to add another league trophy in their cabinet if the decision of the Football Kenyan Federation president Nick Mwendwa to declare them 2019-2020 champions is upheld by the courts.
