Leos beat odds in roaring to Great Rift 10s title

Strathmore Leos proved their competitors wrong when they beat all odds to win the 24 edition of the Top Fry Great Rift 10s as curtains came down on the three-day competition at ASK Nakuru Showground on Sunday.

Leos dismissed stubborn and never say die Kabras Sugar 10-0 in a fast and pulsating encounter that had a lot of thrills in both halves each of fifteen minutes.

Strathmore Leos led 5-0 through an unconverted try by Tony Owuor scored in the fifth minute.

The sugarmen forwards tried their hearts out in the entire match but they were thwarted by the water tight defence mounted by the lions.

Owuor was on the mark again in the last minutes of the second half to extend their victory beyond any reasonable doubt on their opponents.

In the semis, Kabras narrowly overcome Kenya Harlequins 8-5 while Leos clobbered hosts and defending champions Top Fry Nakuru RFC 10-0 and in both matches, the winners were pushed to the final limit before the losers ran out of steam and were nipped in the bud.

As a result, Nakuru RFC dropped out in the Main Cup quarters and were to play Kenya Harlequins in the Main Cup play-offs but the match was cancelled in the last minute due to time constraints.

In their Pool A preliminary match, Harlequins had beaten Nakuru 12-5 and hoped to repeat the same feat in the play-offs to their disappointment.

In the quarters, Nakuru defeated Kenya Commercial Bank 10-7, Harlequins walloped Impala 12-0, Kabras hammered Technical University of Kenya (TUK) 12-7 and Strathmore Leo’s smashed Homeboy 12-0.

KCB therefore dropped in the Plate semis where they defeated Homeboy 7-0 in a pulsating encounter before the bankers hammered Impala RFC 19-5 in the finals to win the Plate Competition. The bankers led 14-0 at the break.

In the other semi final match, Impala had smashed TUK 26-12.

In the Bowl Finals, Catholic Monks won the title with a 8-5 win over University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine who had beaten Egerton University 22-0 in the semis after earlier skinning Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture Technology (JKUAT) 26-0.

Monks first defeated Eldoret RFC 20-0 in the quarters and thereafter smashed United States International University(USIU) 7-5.

Other Bowl quarters saw Egerton dismiss Brumbies 10-5 as   KCA University lose 10-15 to USIU.

In the Shield Finals, KCA University won the title with a 24-0 win over Brumbies.

On their way up, Brumbies silenced JKUAT 15-0 while KCA University stopped Eldoret RFC  5-0.
