Lewandowski double against Scotland gives Poland Euro 2016 hope

Robert Lewandowski scored two goals against Scotland to give Poland a lifeline in their Euro 2016 qualification campaign in a match played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

With the match dragging towards the end and the scoreline at 2-1 in favour of Scotland, it had appeared that there was still hope for the Scots to qualify for the tournament, but that was not to be.

Lewandowski opened the scoring for the night with a goal in the 3rd minute to put Poland ahead before Matt Ritchie equalized in the 45th minute to end the first half at 1-1.

In the second half, Scotland pushed on for a goal and found it in the 65th minute through Steven Fletcher to put the home team in front.

The Bayern Munich striker however stunned the home crowd in the 90th minute after he scrambled the ball over the line to ensure the match ended at 2-2.

The goal disadvantaged Scotland as it automatically knocked them out of the competition with Poland getting a change to proceed if they win their last match on Sunday against Republic of Ireland who beat Germany 1-0 on Thursday night.

Robert Lewandowski now has 14 goals in five games for club and country.

With a match to play Germany are top of the table with 19 points from 9 matches, while Poland and Republic of Ireland are tied second with 18 points, although the latter has an inferior goal difference of 13 to Poland’s 22.

Scotland, Georgia and Gibraltar are third, fourth and fifth with 12, 9 and 0 points respectively.
