Lewandowski out for German double

Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski says adding the DFB-Pokal title to the fourth consecutive Bundesliga crown they won this season would be a fitting end to the campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s side take on Borussia Dortmund in Saturday’s showpiece in Berlin – at a ground that Lewandowski says provides a better atmosphere than a UEFA Champions League final.

The Pole set the record for the fastest ever Bundesliga hat-trick on his way to scoring five goals in nine minutes against Wolfsburg in September, and admits the memory will stay with him forever.

“Every championship is special for me. It’s the fourth time in a row for Bayern, it’s a great moment, a great time. I’m happy that I can be here. Every title, no matter if it’s German championship, or hopefully the German cup on Saturday, is great – that would be a really good season for us. I hope we can achieve that.

[On how he scores so often] “I have no idea. I just try to play well. And of course I need to thank my team-mates. The whole team has helped me achieve what I have this season. It’s important. We already have one title and we want to win a second title this season as well.

[On his five goals against Wolfsburg] “Yes that was a very, very good moment, not just for me, but also for football in general. Those nine minutes on the pitch – I thought it was half an hour. I needed some time to understand what I had achieved. I think I will remember that until the end of my life.

[On the DFB-Pokal final] “I think that two of the best teams in Germany will play in this final. It’s a great moment for everyone watching, for the fans. The atmosphere in Berlin is special to me. It was better than at the Champions League final, I have to admit. I hope we will be happy after the game and I hope we can celebrate again on the balcony here in Munich on Sunday.

[On the game against Hannover] “I knew that Mario [Gotze] needed the goal and I had already scored one, so I thought it was time for him to score a goal. I didn’t want to score that goal at all costs. We saw afterwards that Mario was relaxed, he scored his second goal. Sometimes one situation can change a lot. That’s why I didn’t touch the ball. I wanted to leave the ball for him.”
