Luwere to Ingwe as Muhoroni sink late winner

As soon as the goal went in on the stroke of full-time, the official Muhoroni Youth FC Twitter handle erupted with Luwerrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee….. (Fare the Well) to SportPesa Premier League (SPL) giants, AFC Leopards.

The famous Luwere tune is used as a funeral dirge in Western Kenya where Ingwe draw their biggest support and it was a chant to announce the final nail in the coffin of the early season pace-setters who slumped to a fourth defeat of the season.

Four minutes of added time later, the final score of 1-0 in favour of Muhoroni was confirmed as substitute Benjamin Mosha, who had come on only a few minutes before he sunk the winner in a cagey match at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday.

Mosha started a move with Ndungu and got to the end of the return and had all the time to turn inside the box and shoot past Lucas Indeche in the Leopards goal as Ingwe’s defence went missing.

Toa ndani peleka katikati 1-0 (get the ball from inside the net and take it to the centre),” Muhoroni tweeted with glee at the woes facing Belgian boss, Ivan Minnaert who has now gone six SPL matches without victory as their opponents remained  on 19 points, their blistering start to the season fading into a dark memory.

Muhoroni leapfrogged Leopards to 20 points with a sense of justice at last after their top scorer, Wycliffe Ochomo was denied what looked a legitimate goal in the first half for some infringement.

It would have been a tenth for the season for the Golden Boot chasing marksman.

“We are playing at home and we were chasing a target of nine points in the last three games. We want to achieve 26 points in the first half of the season,” the delighted James Omondi of Muhoroni said after the match.

“What can I say? Nothing, nothing, nothing! All the little details, the referee against us. The handballs, he stopped the game. All the details against us, not for us. He made it difficult for us to do something,” Minnaert uttered blaming officiating for the team’s latest defeat.

“We have also not played well. We don’t find our magic legs, that’s the problem,” the Belgian noted in admitting his side were the second best.

Clifton Miheso was lucky to escape an early booking when he booted Muhoroni keeper; Martin Elungat’s head, who relegated the regular starter Farouk Shikhalo to bench.

Talismanic Ochomo came close to opening the scoring in the seventh minute, connecting Moses Arita’s cross with a brilliant header but the finish flew wide.

Two minutes later Wycliffe Nyangechi found the current SPL top scorer inside the box and after leaving Ramadhan Yakubu and Cresten Mwanzo for dead, he unloaded a feeble shot that was easily gathered by Indeche.

The first real chance for Ingwe came in the 17th when Simon Abuko stole the ball from Paul Muchika and held-off Kelvin Omondi’s challenge in the box, only to lose his footing just before pulling the trigger.

The speedy ‘Walcott’ Abuko out-paced Nyangechi on the left and got to the box but poor ball control cost Leopards a glorious opportunity at the half hour mark.

Ochomo thought he had given Muhoroni the lead in the 39th when he headed in a corner past Indeche, but the referee controversially chalked it off.

Just before the break, Abuko set up captain Kepha Aswani who made no mistake to find the net but first assistant referee’s flag was up, citing an offside.

With the match still deadlocked at 0-0 in the 61st, Omondi brought off Yusuf Mohammed as Minnaert rested the profilgate Hedmond Mauda for Allan Kateregga.

But it was Mosha, who came in for Arita in the 80th minute who proved to be the most inspired introduction after claiming the decider.
