Macharia takes delight in Gor debut goal

Gor Mahia winger John Macharia has expressed his delight and disappointment at the same time after scoring on his debut game while celebrating his 22nd birthday,  but eventually his side lost the tie.

Macharia scored Gor Mahia’s second goal to make it 3-2 against Kariobangi Sharks in a FKF-PL match that they lost 4-3.

“It’s a great feeling for any player to score a debut goal on his birthday. The game was relatively good but we went down 3-1 in the first half and that was tough because we tried to come back but eventually we were not good enough,” bemoaned Macharia.

The winger is however confident that new coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto, who was in the stands during the contest, will inject a different game approach to help them right their mistakes.

“I believe the coach saw where he needs to put an extra work because we need to start winning matches if at all we want to defend our title,” he said, adding: “We the new players in the team hold Gor highly and we’re not happy to see things not going on how they should be although it’s early to judge on anything.”

The former Kenya Under-20 player inked a two-year deal with the 19-time league champions late last year having previously featured for Thika United, FC Kolkheti and FC Saburto-2 of Georgia.

He moved to Georgia in 2017 where he was snapped by FC Kolkheti Poti from National Super League (NSL) side FC Talanta; the club having been home to midfielder Amos Nondi (now at Dila Gori) and Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma (now at AIK Fotboll).

The budding star has promised to help his new side continue the local league dominance with his ‘predatory instincts’.

“I want to assure everyone who is associated with Gor Mahia that I have come to work and I’m relishing my stay at this wonderful club. We are simply going to do our best to make the team even better.”

Gor Mahia have started the season on a wrong footing, managing one win from three league outings so far although they have played fewer matches.

Besides the 4-3 loss against Kariobangi Sharks at Kasarani Stadium last weekend, the Kenya’s football top dog have also gone down 2-1 to Tusker FC and a 2-1 win against Ulinzi Stars. They next face Mathare United on Thursday.
