Maelo buoyed by new Sofapaka sponsorship deal

Sofapaka captain George Maelo has challenged his teammates to step up and deliver the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title next season after the team agreed a club-record shirt sponsorship agreement with a gaming firm.

Maelo said the new deal was a big relief for the club and the players given the economic crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The president has played his part and it’s now up to us to do it on the pitch for our fans. I want to thank our sponsors for believing in us and we are hoping we will make them proud of our performance come next season,” Maelo said.

The 2009 KPL champions signed the two-year deal Sh77 million, a step up from their previous deal that was worth Sh15 million signed in the 2017/18 season, and the Sh35 million in 2019.

Their shirt sponsorship is the third most lucrative in the league after Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards who recently penned Sh55 million and Sh40 million-a-year deals respectively.

“We are determined to end Gor’s dominance in the league and as a unit we will work hard to do what our previous colleagues did in 2009. This will also be an opportunity to strength our squad according to the technical bench recommendation,” Maelo said.

Sofapaka where tenth on the log by the time the league was stopped in march because of the corona virus pandemic.
