Magana, Nyaruai out to defend titles at Chess Championship

Benjamin Magana of KCB Chess Club and Joyce Nyaruai of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) will be seeking to defend their titles at the five day national chess championships which start on Jamhuri Day at Parklands Sports Club.

The duo is enjoying top form and sits pretty at the summit of their respective national ranking published at the end of November by world body FIDE.

Benjamin Magana will be seeking to win his fourth national title having won it in 2006, 2013 and 2017.

At the same time, following her exploits at the Kisii Open Chess Tournament, Joyce Nyaruai is expected to have a field day in opening matches against slightly lower rated players before facing off with her main rival, Sasha Mongeli- the recent winner of StarTimes Sports Personality of the Month after excelling in World Chess Olympiad 2018 in Batumi, Georgia.

Other registered high profile ladies expected to put up a huge fight include Gloria Jumba, Daphne Mwikali, Lucy Wanjiru and Under 18 national Champion Dorcus Wanjala .

Former national Champion Mehul Gohil who was dethroned by Benjamin Magana is however talking tough, promising to take pleasure on exerting revenge on all who denied him the chance of defending his title.

“I’m going for nothing short of victory. Let others make their own calculations but my focus is winning the title back,” Said Mehul .

The event has attracted over 200 players from all parts of the country. The Championship will run from December 12- 16. The winner will walk away with a cash prize of Ksh 100,000,  and an air ticket to Mombasa Open.

The closing ceremony will be held on Sunday where the league winners will be awarded. Equity Bank defended their title in a dramatic final match against its perennial rival KCB Group last weekend.
