Makolanders beef up amid kickoff uncertainty

Kenya Women Premier League side Makolanders FC are racing to bolster their squad ahead of the new season with the acquisition of two defenders, with more signings expected in the coming days.

The duo Martha Wambui and Liam Otieno, head coach Michael Okanga believes will help strengthen the outfit.

“I have already signed Martha Wambui and Liam Atieno. They both finished school recently and that’s why I decided to have them because I loved their style of play at school championships.

“So far I have released three players – Mary Wairimu whom we signed from Gaspo, Marcy Nyambura who joined us from Zetech as well as Suzan Mogire from Kisii. The trio hasn’t reported to camp since Covid-19 was reported in March and they haven’t called to explain why, that’s why I decide to release them.”

Okanga however decried the lack of clarity on when the season will begin due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We haven’t rolled out serious training calendar in our teams because we are not sure whether the league will resume. The Covid-19 cases are rising daily and even after the federation released the fixtures I am not sure whether everything will fall in place.”

“The government will have to carry out Covid -19 tests to every player in each participating club; both in men and women league and I am not sure if it will be possible keeping in mind that testing costs lot of money, but let’s wait and see.”

In the new season fixtures released by FKF, the league was to begin on November 28 with Makolanders tackling Kibera Soccer Academy before playing Zetech on December 5 then facing Mathare United Women on December 12 in their first three fixtures.
