Makwatta double propels Leopards past Wazito

Free scoring JohnMark-Makwata hit a brace to help AFC Leopards thrash big spenders Wazito FC 2-0 in an early kick off match played at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday to lift them to position seven on the Kenyan Premier League table.

Red-hot Makwatta who has already bagged 12 goals this season is leading on the golden boot race having scored in each single match this year, claiming his first hat-trick against Nzoia Sugar before scoring through a spot kick against Posta Rangers.

Leopards looked strengthened at the back thanks to the return of their number one shot stopper, Ugandan Benjamin Ochan, who had not stood between the sticks in the last two matches this year.

Makwatta’s first goal came in 10th minute with a fine kick from a lovely through pass by Austin Odhiambo who also assisted the former Ulinzi Stars hit man to earn his brace.

Harambee Stars mid-fielder Whyvonne Isuza and Dennis Sikhayi did not make their debut and were not even on the bench against their former employers Leopards.

Ochan pulled a huge save in the 15th minute from a Pitson Mutamba’s flick which had been delivered by Dennis Ng’ang’a from a corner kick.

In the 21st minute, Ng’ang’a again had a clear chance in front of Leopards goalie but his free kick from the edge flew over the bar.

Musa Masika collected the ball from his team mate finding a space to unleash a shot which was saved by Ochan who was a head-ache for the striker with his prowess, diving to parry a shot away again in the dying minutes to earn a clean sheet.

The Antony Kimani coached has now collected six points from a possible nine in 2020 after humiliating Zoo Kericho 4-1 and losing 2-1 to Posta Rangers in the mid-week tie.

Wazito, under head coach Stewart Hall, sit at position 14th and have now registered their 10th defeat this season, only three less than strugglers Kisumu All Stars and Chemelil Sugar who are in position 16th and 17th in that order.
