Malkia Strikers hit Cameroon in World Cup consolation
The national women volleyball team Malkia Strikers overcame Cameroon 3-1 for their only victory at what has been a wretched FIVB World Cup campaign in Japan.
Prior to the match, Kenya and Cameroon- Africa’s only representatives at the event- had both lost 10 consecutive matches and were looking to bow out with something positive to take home.
Malkia Strikers won the first set in 25-15 before doubling their lead bagging the second set with a slender win of 26-24.
The West Africans however regrouped to win the third set and their first in the match in 25-14 with Kenya survinig a late scare to edge them 25-21 in the fourth and final set and thus reign supreme in 3-1 win.
It was the second successive win for Malkia Strikers against Cameroon inside a month after getting the better of them at the finals of the African Games in Rabat, Morocco.
It was however another poor outing for Africans as the continents top two-ranked teams struggled against the Worlds best raising many questions about the development of the sport in the continent.
The two-week long competition played in a round-robin format came to an end with the men’s tournament set to kick off from October 1-15 also in Japan.
