Man Utds clash against Chelsea could be the last for Van Gaal Reports

Reports from England indicate that the high level clash pitting Manchester United against Chelsea could be the last for under-fire manager Louis van Gaal.

According to the Telegraph, Van Gaal has held discussions with the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward since the Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Stoke City before attending the training session at Carrington on Sunday.

The 64-year-old is set to take charge during the match against Chelsea though it is unlikely that he would continue at the helm, despite receiving backing from the club’s hierarchy.

Pressure has mounted for Van Gaal in recent days with United’s loss against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium touted to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The 2-0 defeat piled misery to the Red Devils who have now lost four consecutive matches for the first time since October/November in 1961. United have now gone 7 matches without a win, the worse record since the 1989/90 season.

In what appears to be admission to loss of control on the team, Van Gaal said it was not always a requirement that clubs fire managers stating that he could choose to voluntarily resign.

“But I have said already in former press conferences that it is not always like that – that the club has to fire or sack me. Sometimes I do it by myself. I am the one who wants to speak first with the board of Manchester United and with my members of staff and players,” he said.

Van Gaal noted that the club’s dismal performance, which has seen them exit Champions League into Europa League and drop to fifth in the league, has changed the variables at Old Trafford.
