Michael Carrick set to leave Manchester United

Manchester United’s midfield maestro Michael Carrick is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, according to reports from English media.

The 34-year-old, who is in his tenth season at Old Trafford, has only started in 11 matches this season due to injuries and featured as a second half substitute in United’s 3-1 win against Derby County on Friday.

Several clubs including Newcastle and French giants Paris Saint-Germain have in the past expressed interest in signing the English midfielder.

Prior to joining United, Carrick played for Tottenham Hotspur where he made 64 appearances scoring two goals.

He has made 278 appearances for Manchester United since joining the club in 2006, scoring 17 goals.

Carrick made his first appearance for England national team in 2001 at the age of 20 and has since featured in 34 matches.

The central midfielder’s contract ends in five months and he has expressed openness to hold discussions with other teams.

The reports, which appeared on The Sun Sunday, came days after former United midfielder Nemanja Vidic announced his retirement from football over injury concerns.

Vidic moved to Inter Milan from Manchester United in 2014 where he had spent eight years of his football career, captaining for three seasons.

He won five Premier League and one Champions League title while playing for Old Trafford.

Vidic was released from Inter Milan earlier this month.
