Mashemeji Derby at risk of postponement over security

The much anticipated ‘Mashemeji Derby’ might be postponed because of security concerns with discussions going on to ensure the first clash of the biggest game in domestic football this season presses on.

While the Kenyan Premier League insists that the derby is on at Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani, reports indicate that Kenya Police are not comfortable with the Sunday 6 date.

This is because on the same date, the third First Lady Half Marathon will be on in Nairobi, with 35 000 participants already registered.

KPL head of security GMT Ottieno says they held a security meeting with the Police on Tuesday, a development confirmed to Citizen by his CEO, Jack Oguda.

“The police had reservations with the numbers (of policemen) we requested for.  We also recognize that there will be a lot of fans who might be a soft target for terrorists, so we also requested sniffer dogs at the venue. But they are yet to respond,” said Ottieno.

The game is classified as high risk and requires heavy police involvement owing to the volatile nature of the passionately supported arch rivals.

A police source who does not want to be named said their priority is the First Lady Half Marathon where even the top police chiefs will be involved.

“We are committing heavily to this marathon. Even if it the event ends at 1pm, there is no time for a quick turn around to move to Kasarani and do a proper sweep before fans get in. We suggest that they postpone that match,” he said.
