Mashemeji Derby: Just what is at stake?

Points, History and bragging rights are some of the things at stake as old football rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards face off Sunday at Nyayo Stadium in the second leg of Mashemeji Derby.

Gor Mahia are currently top with 54 points having played 22 matches, one less than AFC Leopards who stand fifth with 35 points.

While a win for AFC Leopards will catapult them to fourth place in the table with only six matches to play, a win for Kogalo will consolidate their hold on top of the league.

Both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have won the league 13 times and a win for Gor Mahia will set a new record.

The derby dates back to May 1968 with a total of 79 meetings since then. AFC Leopards has the most derby wins (27) while Gor Mahia have won the past 22 meetings. 30 of the derby matches have ended in a draw.

The last meeting between the two sides was during their first leg league meeting in April ended in 1-1 a draw in April.

To ensure a win, AFC Leopards will seek to break Gor Mahia’s 22 match unbeaten record and it will be interesting to see if the return of Ingwe head coach Zdravko Logarusic to the team after a four league match absence will boost the side.

In his speech, Logarusic, who will be making his 6th derby appearance for both sides, revealed that his intent it to halt Gor Mahia’s unbeaten run with is just one match less than the one held by AFC Leopards under the reigns of coach Jan Koops in 2012.

With just hours to the match, the die is cast. All eyes and ears will be at Nyayo Stadium to see if Gor Mahia’s fine form continues, or ends.
