Match between Belgium and Spain called off amid security fears

Belgium’s friendly against Spain on Tuesday has been cancelled amid security fears following Friday’s terror attacks in Paris.

The Belgian government raised the terror threat level to 3 on Monday, suggesting there is a serious threat to the country’s security.

Brussels-born Salah Abdeslam has been named as a key suspect in the attack on France’s capital, and it is believed the man hunt currently underway is behind the alert.

In a statement, the Belgian FA said: “Taking into account the exceptional circumstances, we cannot take any security risk to our players and fans.”

The match is currently the only casualty of Friday’s events, with France’s friendly against England at Wembley on Tuesday set to go ahead.

Belgium have lost just once in 14 international matches, dating back to the last year’s World Cup, while Spain take a seven-game winning run into the tie.

Meanwhile, Spain head coach Vicente Del Bosque is adamant that the terror attacks in Paris should not deter France from hosting Euro 2016, adding that football world shouldn’t be scared.

“I would like the Euros to be hosted in France as it was the chosen country. Nobody should make this change as it would mean accepting what terrorists are trying to establish,” he said.

Reports on ESPN have however confirmed that the friendly match between France and England will go ahead as planned.
