Mathare dance to league summit

Mathare United tossed to the summit of the Kenya Premier League table after edging Nakumatt FC 3-2 in a five-goal thriller in a mid-week top-flight tie staged at Ruaraka grounds on Wednesday.

The 2008 KPL champions took the lead in the early stages of the first half through Cliff Nyakeya before Nakumatt’s Donald Musoti cancelled the lead a few minutes to the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Francis Kimanzi coached side restored their lead through Francis Omondi in the 68th minute before experienced Clifford Alwanga killed the tie moments later following a swift assist from George Owino to make it 3-1.

Donald Musoti’s strike in the 89th minute could not salvage any point for the struggling Nakumatt.

The ‘Slum Boys’ are now one point ahead of Gor Mahia, in second place, on 19 points.

In another KPL mid-week tie played on Wednesday, Chemilil Sugar played a barren draw against struggling Thika United in Chemelil while at the Camp Toyoyo grounds, Posta Rangers beat Kakamega Homeboyz 2-0 with Osborne Monday and Kennedy Otieno on target.

Elsewhere, Christopher Masinza’s goal in the 87th minute handed Vihiga United their first win as they shocked Ulinzi Stars 1-0 at the Afraha Stadium.
