Mathare hold Gor, Tusker thwart Sony fightback

Clifford Alwanga scored a late equaliser as Mathare United rallied to hold Gor Mahia FC to a 2-2 draw in a captivating Kenyan Premier League (KPL) top of the table clash at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday.

Francis Omondi had given the hosts a dream start when he drilled home the opener from a 17th minute free-kick but Gor replied almost immediately as Jacques Tuyisenge won and converted a penalty to make it 1-1.

Tuyisenge showed great poacher’s instinct moments before the break when he pounced on Robert Mboya’s block off Meddie Kagere’s effort to give the champions the first half advantage.

Mathare refused to lie down and were rewarded for their relentless push for the equalising goal as Alwanga poked home to snatch a point at the death.

At the Ruaraka Grounds in Nairobi, Boniface Muchiri hit a late winner as Tusker FC edged Sony Sugar 3-2 to make it two wins in two matches for new head coach Robert Matano.

Timothy Otieno had given the hosts a roaring start with half brace before George Abege’s replied with a double of his own in the second half only for Muchiri to thwart the fightback in the 89th.

In the earlier fixture at the Kenyatta Stadium, Hassan Abdalla notched a brace as visiting Bandari FC defeated Nakumatt FC 2-1 to close in on the league leaders Gor and Mathare.

The Dockers took the lead in the 13th minute got the better of Lucas Indeche from a one on one after a slaloming run past the home defence.

Boniface Mukhekhe restored parity from the spot moments later before Abdalla struck again to pile more misery on the bottom-table side.

At the Afraha Stadium, Ulinzi eased to a 2-0 win over Chemelil Sugar thanks to first half goals from Oliver Ruto and Masita Masuta.
