Mathare sip Tusker, open two-point lead at KPL summit

Mathare United returned to the summit of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) with a 2-1 win away at Tusker FC on Saturday.

Johstone Omurwa and James Kinyanjui struck delightful goals either half of the match with the result meaning Mathare preserved their unbeaten start to the season and underlined their credentials as the early title challengers.

Having achieved a two-goal cushion inside 69 minutes, Mathare allowed their intensity to drop and they were punished for it as Peter Nzuki pulled one back with a headed finish to set up a tense final ten minutes.

It was the visitors that created the better chances in the closing stages with striker Chris Ochieng forcing a good stop off goalkeeper Emery Mwuyekure five minutes from time.

Bandari FC had gone temporarily gone top after defeating Mount Kenya United by a similar scoreline in Saturday’s early kick-off at the Afraha Stadium in Machakos but Mathare’s relentless start pushed them back on top.

At the Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega Homeboyz needed a late Allan Wanga strike to salvage a point from their 1-1 draw with Zoo Kericho who had taken a first minute lead courtesy of Newton Ondari.

Zoo, who have now draw each of their last three matches, ended the match with a man down after midfielder Danson Chetambe was given the marching orders for an awful challenge on Festus Okiring.

AFC Leopards’ dismal start to the campaign rolled on at Afraha with hosts suffering a shock 1-0 loss at the hands of KCB. The victory was the Bankers first this season, lifting them two from the bottom of the table into 16th.

SUMMARISED RESULTS
Mount Kenya United 1-2 Bandari FC
Tusker FC 1-2 Mathare United
Kakamega Homeboyz 1-1 Zoo Kericho
