Mathare, Zoo in upset wins as Stima holds Thika

Mathare United and Zoo Kericho FC produced upset wins on Sunday that could spark their wobbly campaigns to life when they tore up the form books to overhaul Kenyan Premier League (KPL) titans.

Travelling to Gor Mahia on the back of a six-match winless streak, Mathare United summoned eked out a 1-0 victory to register only their second win of the season while Zoo mustered efforts to stun Ulinzi Stars 2-1 win.

It was a shot in the arm for the Kericho-based side who had never won a top flight match and in doing so on away turf, they just might have hurdled a momentous psychological barrier in their bid to avoid a straight drop back to the National Super League (NSL).

Geoffrey Gichana had put the visitors into an early lead before a Churchill Muloma pile-driver restored parity. The in-form Stephen Waruru should have given Ulinzi the lead moments later but his delicate chip sailed just over with keeper Vincent Misikhu beaten.

Ulinzi Stars sharpshooter Stephen Waruru should have increased his goal tally to five in the 31st minute but his rasping shot was blocked by goalkeeper Vincent Misikhu for a fruitless corner.

The hosts had a golden opportunity to take the lead but Daniel Waweru rammed a penalty against the post after Waruru had been brought down inside the 18-yard box and would rue that miss late on.

Striker Kevin Omondi settled the matters in the 69th minute, rising highest to nod in a well floated free-kick from Bernard ‘Wanguche’ Odhiambo.

Despite their win, Zoo remain bottom of the KPL standings on five points, one below Western Stima who played to 1-1 draw with Thika United at the Thika Sub-County Stadium.
