mCHEZA injects Ksh3M into Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Gaming platform mCHEZA has announced a Ksh3 million sponsorship towards the organisation of the 2015 Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) slated for January 15, 2016 at the KICC in Nairobi.

Addressing the press on Monday, Acumen Communications Limited Marketing Advisor John Seel noted that mCHEZA was keen to support talented athletes in a bid to raise the cadre of sports in the country.

“We are happy to sponsor the SOYA Awards this year as it speaks to our vision of recognising talented athletes. Our goal is to scout for and nurture talented sportsmen and women from the grassroots,” said Seel.

“We have so far partnered with Green Sport Africa to help scout for footballers in the county level, and also sponsor the growth of Tejas Hirani, who is the only African to fly the Kenyan flag in Rallycross globally.”

The 2015 SOYA awards themed Take Responsibility; Stay Clean will be drumming up support for a clean sport in the wake of doping cases amongst the country’s famed runners.

Speaking at the event, SOYA director John Kaplich thanked corporates for the continuous support in cash and in kind towards hosting the prestigious event.

“We thank you for your support in the awards that seek not only to recognise but to motivate sportsmen and women to perform exemplarily well in their specific line of sport,” noted Kaplich.

He promised to unveil the surprise guest on Wednesday January 13, 2016.

The panel of judges comprising of sports writers, reporters and editors had a huge task of picking the finest sports men from a season that had a series of Olympic qualifiers for Kenyan teams and athletes, local and regional competition as well as the World Athletics Championships in Beijing where Kenya topped the medal table for the first time in the event’s history.

The panel which was chaired by Media personality Watson Karuma noted that the 2015 pool of athletes presented a challenge with diverse fields to choose from.

“We had a successful but challenging time selecting the nominees, and as we close the SMS nominations this Wednesday, we look forward to a successful event on Friday,” noted Watson.

SOYA is a gala that fetes great sports personalities who performed well through the year under review.
