Mean Machine crowned Embu 7s champs

University side Mean Machine staged a comeback to seal a 12-7 win over Kenya Harlequins to bag the 2018 Embu Sevens title.

Marvin Kiringiri scored a brace in each half to cancel out an Edward Shiundu first half try to secure their first silverware this season.

Harlequins huffed and puffed for a consolation but could not find a way out past Machine’s defence.

By winning the title,  Machine pocketed Sh 100,000 in prize money.

Machine’s head coach Ramsfield Matekwa could not hide his joy after the win.

“We have been working hard and it has has finally paid off . Going forward to the local circuit our aim is to maintain the consistency,” Matekwa said.

On their part, losing finalists Kenya Harlequins walked away with Sh 30,000 cash prize while their second team Vandals RFC who came out third took Sh 15,000.

With the local circuit set to kick off next month, the preparations can only get intense for the participating teams.

Kenyatta University head coach Micheal “Tank” Otieno was satisfied with the tournament organization, hailing it for nurturing talent.

“It has been a successful tournament and I would love to challenge Kenya Rugby to come up with such tournaments to nurture talents at the grassroot,”Otieno said.

The local sevens circuit is set to take place on July 7-8 with the Nakuru leg, also known as the Prinsloo Sevens kicking off this season’s circuit.
