Meru RFC confident of sealing Championship slot

Meru RFC confident of sealing Championship slot

The head coach of Meru RFC, Patrick Mwika, is optimistic that despite the challenges they are facing, they’ll seal a slot to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

Meru RFC competes in the Central Region Nationwide League but Mwika is confident that as the competition heads to the tail end, they’ll earn apply-off slot to seal a ticket to the Championship.

They are currently placed sixth on the table on 29 points after 10 games and are aiming to force themselves in a top six finish to earn a play-off slot.

Kiambu RFC top the log on 38 points from an equal number of games as MKU Thika and Chuka sit second and third respectively on 37 points each.

The two top finishers earn automatic promotion tickets to the Championship while third, fourth, fifth and sixth place finishers battle for the other two promotion slots and Mwika is confident that they’ll meet the cut despite the  teething financial challenges.

“The journey for us is not simple, lack of funds to facilitate our travels has contributed to our poor performance in the league,” Mwika lamented

With little hope in the horizon, the club has in many instances turned to the Meru County Government, seeking financial support but nothing much has materialised.

However in a rejoinder, Daniel Kiogora, the Sports CS for Meru County said that they’ve always offered a helping hand to the team but reckoned that the county has limited resources.

According to Kiogora, the county is exploring on additional ways of supporting the team.

Last weekend Meru RFC handed Thika a walk-over after failing to travel to Thika to honour the match.
