Miathene eyes Meru Open honours

Miathene Boys 15s a side rugby team head coach Patrick Mwika is confident his charges will do well this weekend in the Meru Open tournament after shrugging off opponents to defend the Eastern Region Schools tournament held at Miathene Boys, Meru County at the weekend.

En route to the crown, Miathene lost their opening match to Meru Polytechnic 29-0, before humbling St Cyprian 17-0, and followed it up with a 25-5 win against Keeru High School in the opening stages.

At the quarter finals, Miathene outclassed Abothuguci 21-7, before dispatching Igembe Boys 10-5 in the semis. Their good form saw them thrash David Kamama High School 24-0 to win the title.

And elated by the win, coach Mwika expressed confidence of putting a stellar performance in the weekend duty that will see schools and polytechnics battle it out for honours.

“We had prepared really well for the tournament, we wanted to win and it went as planned,  the players were highly motivated and we are now focusing on the Meru Opens where we expect to shine,’’ Mwika said.

In other categories, Meru School won the hockey title as Mutewa Boys bagged the volleyball crown. Kanjalu Girls emerged winners in girls’ volleyball as Meru School humbled Miruriiri 28-25 in basketball to retain their title.

In handball, Wamba Boys beat Kathanthatu Boys 33-13.
