Missed chances cost us Uganda game – Ouma

Harambee Starlets head coach David Ouma has blamed the 1-0 defeat to Uganda’s Crested Cranes in their opening match of the Cecafa Women Championship on Thursday to failure to convert their chances.

Lilian Mutuuzo’s lone goal in the seventh minute was enough to dim the Starlets and Ouma maintains the picture would have been different has his charges been sharp in the face of goal.

“We really got a lot of scoring chances but we wasted them, and this is what transpired in our second leg match of AWCON qualifier in Malabo against Equatorial Guinea. My strikers were holding the ball for long instead of shooting in the opponent’s goal,’he lamented.

“For now I am really working on that so that if we meet Tanzania tomorrow such simple mistakes do not happen again.

“I believe even if Uganda defeated us, we had the chance to get back and win but the important thing is to rectify our mistakes and be ready against Tanzania. Our hopes are very high and it’s too early to judge,”he added.

The Starlets take on the champions Tanzania tomorrow at the Nyamirambo Stadium from 4.40pm aiming to get their first win before winding up their pool matches against Ethiopia Wednesday.

The Starlets came close to bagging the crown in 2016, reaching the final where they lost to Tanzania .
