Mixed Results as Kenya Youth County Sports Conclude
The Kenya Youth County Sports concluded today with teams posting mixed results.
The week-long event saw 24 counties take part in different sports including football and volleyball games.
The host Laikipia County proved the best in Volleyball men after thrashing Garissa three sets to two while Nandi county girls humiliated their counterparts from Kakamega in the women category by three sets to two in the final tournaments.
In soccer, Nyandarua County went down one goal to Kajiado in the men’s football while Laikipia Girls were thrashed five goals to four in penalty shootouts by their Meru neighbours after a goalless draw during the normal time.
Each team that managed the third position was awarded medals with the winners taking home a cash prize of Ksh 100,000. The first runners up were gives Ksh 75,000 while second runners up carried home Ksh 50,000.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Nyandarua Governor Waithaka said there is need to support the youth by nurturing their talents.
He challenged participating counties to start preparing their teams for the next edition of the competition early and from the grassroot level saying this will help improve performances.
Speaking to the press, the event organizing committee chairman Benjamin Njoka, who is also the Tharaka Nithi County Chief Officer in charge of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs said sports are meant to encourage interaction between youth from different counties and nurture talent.
Njoka noted emphasized the need to encourage more youth to engage in sporting activities at an early stage since most clubs were looking for young talents.
Laikipia County Governor Joshua Irungu was among other leaders present at the closing ceremony.
