MKU ready to move on as KRU delay Cup appeal

MKU Thika head coach Peter Mutai sees no end in sight for his side following the decision by Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) to annul their 25-14 Central Region Cup win over Kiambu RFC.

The KRU cancelled their victory following a successful appeal by Kiambu who had claimed Thika fielded an ineligible player on Sunday.

Thika lodged a counter-appeal arguing the player in question – Morgan Rangita – is enrolled as a student at the institution and thus is eligible to feature for the side despite being a KCB RFC player.

KRU have since recalled their trophy and medals and pending Thika’s appeal, Kiambu are the legitimate Central Region champions meaning the former have to face Technical University of Mombasa in Mombasa in the nationwide play-off.

“It’s very unfortunate they are taking their sweet time whereas we have only a day to go. They (KRU) had set the hearing for yesterday but postponed it to a later date; we just have to take it as an answer and prepare mentally for TUM but they could have given us a fair platform to air our side of story,” Mutai told Citizen Digital.

This was the third victory for Mutai after scooping the award twice with Thika RFC in the past two seasons and he believes they still have a fighting chance to prove their critic’s wrong.

“A fighting chance for us and we are up to the task. That fighting spirit will be key in this playoff and also in this campaign towards championship promotion,” he added.

Kiambu maintained the victory awarded to them was deserved.

Should MKU win their match against TUM they will face Nairobi Nationwide finalist Northern Suburbs in the Nationwide Quarterfinals stage.

Both finalists of the Nationwide finals will get a direct promotion to the Championship league.
