Mombasa rolls out boxing squad for Inter Cities tourney

The Boxing Association of Mombasa has released their squad of 13 boxers and two coaches who will represent the coastal city in the East Africa Inter Cities Championships that run from June 21 to 25 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The team was named following the conclusion of two days Trials over the weekend at Mombasa’s Tononoka Social Hall.

Mwinyifaki Kombo and Daudi Ahmed (light flyweight), Thomas Kazungu (flyweight), Mohammed Ali and Mohammed Mbaruk (bantamweight), Hamza Said and Fredrick Oduor Onyango (lightweight) made the team.

Pius Onyango and Kazungu Kailo (light welterweight), Hussein Mohammed (welterweight), Denis Otieno and Denis Wanyonyi (middleweight) and Seif Juma (light heavyweight) round the list of the selected pugilists.

“We are expecting to finalise our squad two days before our journey to Tanzania and we are sure that we will sail through,” Association Secretary, Crispin Peter Onyango said.

The team will be coached by Lemmy ‘Cobra’ Katibi and James Opiyo Mboya.

“We are expecting to report to camp likely on Saturday and stay there until the 19th when we depart. We are planning to camp around Tononoka because of its central location,” he added.

Nairobi, Mwanza, Tanga, Arusha, Mbeya, Dodoma, Temeke, Kinondoni and Ilala all from Tanzania as well as Kampala, Kigali and Bujumbura are other East African cities that will take part.

Nigeria Navy City Club has been invited to take part in the first time in the completion was held last in Mombasa 2015.
