Mombasa to host 2018 SOYA Awards

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Soya founder Paul Tergat on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see this year’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) ceremony held in the coastal city of Mombasa.

This year’s ceremony will mark the 15th edition of the awards, and the first time ever that it will be held outside Nairobi.

Speaking shortly after the signing of the MoU, Tergat said they are willing to go round the country to support and develop youths’ talent. He also urged all parties to invest in talent development.

“I call upon everyone to come and support this event because it has grown leaps and bounds over the years since it started. We will continue engaging other counties because we want to host it .Also, in other parts of the country as a way of promoting sports tourism,’’ said the former world marathon record holder.

Governor Joho said that SOYA coming to Mombasa will create opportunity for youths and challenged the youngsters to take sports as a career adding that event will not only see the County host the gala but also partner with SOYA in initiatives that will promote nurturing the uptake of sports disciplines.

The youthful governor promised to pull all strings to ensure that the event earmarked for January 2019 is adequately prepared for.

“The sole purpose of us coming together with SOYA is to nurture talents and we are going to partner with other stakeholders to ensure that our youths benefit from sports,” said Joho.

Present to witness the ceremony were representatives from the event’s title sponsors, Safaricom PLC led by the Company’s Head of Department, Coast region, James Maitai.
