Morans begin preps for Afrobasket qualifiers

The national men’s basketball team Morans have begun training ahead of Afrobasket qualifiers set for next month.

The team got the nod from the government to embark on training after Covid-19 halted sports activities and they have wasted little time getting right into it at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.

Morans head coach Cliff Owour says only seven players came for day one training yesterday as others did not make it due to work related issues.

Seven of our players did manage to come for day one training which went on well. Others did not manage because of work related activities but I expect them in the coming sessions,” he said.

Those who attended day one session include team captain Griffin Ligare who doubles up as Thunder captain with fellow Thunder-mate Faheem Juma, Equity bank duo Victor Ochieng and James Mwangi. Others are KPA’s Victor Odendo, Strathmore Blades’ Fidel Okoth and Ulinzi’s Joseph Khaemba.

However, despite being away for a long time due to corona pandemic, Owuor is pleased with the fitness levels of the players, noting that it’s evidence that they undertook individual training at home.

“My players are in good shape which shows they have been training. This is good news to us as the technical bench,” he added.

The qualifiers are set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda from 25th to 29th November 2020 with Kenya facing Angola, Mozambique and Senegal.

The Morans qualified for the second round after winning the pre-qualification round that was held at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium earlier this year.
