Kenya Morans head coach Liz Mills has urged more women to join basketball coaching classes in order to keep up with their male counterparts and compete for top jobs in the sport.

Speaking after arriving back from the Afrobasket qualifiers, Mills insisted on the importance of narrowing the gap between the two genders for the growth of the game in the country.

“There is need to have more women in this amazing sport and positions how do we expect young women to grow up and do great things if they don’t have visible role models.

“We also want young boys and men to grow up knowing that gender doesn’t matter and you can be taught by a coach of any gender and still succeed,” the Australian Mills said.

On Sunday, Mills became the first female coach to qualify a men’s team for Afrobasket Finals as the Morans qualified for the FIBA Afrobasket for the first time in 28years

The Australian who has coached several African teams as an assistant coach was saddled with the responsibility of qualifying Kenya with hurdles like Senegal, Angola and Mozambique that needed to be overcome.

Morans had just one win after the first round of the qualifiers and needed one more win to qualify, the team did it in grand style after beating of the power houses in African basketball, Angola 74-73 to ensure qualification.

Star players Eric Mutoro admits it was believe and team work that made it happen.

“We went to the tournament with the determination of qualifying every one gave 150 % with the roles they were given to do,and with the experience of coach Mills we knew we have what it takes to make it happen ,”Mutoro asserted .
