Mount Kenya won’t be relegated, says defiant Medo

Mount Kenya United will not be relegated from the Kenya Premier League despite getting glued on the bottom spot, head coach Melis Medo has said.

Medo who is barely two months at the club after parting ways with KPL leaders Sofapaka, insists his side are playing well despite the financial struggles.

United were 3-2 losers to Vihiga United over the weekend and Medo attributes the poor run to lack of experience.

“Seven or six of the players that you saw are 19 or 20 years old. They have never played in KPL before. It was some good practice. I don’t think these guys will go down, it is way too early.

Medo who is his second stint at the KPL outfit, insists he is better off with young talent with vast room for development than seasoned league bigwigs that have previously donned a number of different badges.

“I believe in young guys. I don’t want to get a guy who has been playing for all the teams in the KPL. No, no. I have a 19-year old or 20-year old, that’s good. They are playing good. But let them blend,” he said.

Medo however acknowledged that the financial difficulties are a core contributor to their misfortunes on the pitch, but holding that the situation will improve with time.

“The thing about the money is killing us. Everybody knows we are struggling financially. We are way, way behind and to see a team playing football like this when they haven’t been paid for months, you have to give them credit.”

The club lies bottom of the 18-member league on 12 points as the first leg comes to a close, having lost 12, drawn three and won three, conceding 36 goals and scoring only 12 with 18 matches to the end of the season.

The outfit re-branded from Nakumatt FC in April 2018, after  being bought by politician Francis Mureithi, who pledged to oversee an upturn in the club’s financial fortunes, been has since then seen the crisis deepen to the extent of adversely affecting their performances, but it seems the promise is yet to be met.
