Mourinho adamant Rooney’s best day is yet to come

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho believes Wayne Rooney’s best day is still ‘yet to come’, despite the striker moving level with Bobby Charlton as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in their 4-0 FA Cup win over Reading.

The 31-year-old’s strike against the Royals took him to 249 in 543 games – reaching the landmark 215 matches and four seasons quicker than Charlton.

But Mourinho expressed that Rooney’s best day will be when he becomes the record goal scorer in the ‘club’s history’ not the day he equalled it.

“I think the best day will arrive. This is not the best day for him, the best day will arrive it is just a question of when. But it’s amazing because everybody knows who Sir Bobby is and what he means to the club and English football. To score the same amount of goals for Man United is fantastic, but again the best day will arrive.

“I was saying the best day is when he scores the next goal, when he scores the next goal he becomes the best scorer in the history on Manchester United and that’s an amazing thing,” Mourinho said.

Anthony Martial doubled the lead before the break, but it was youngster Marcus Rashford who secured the victory with a brace in the second half sending United through to the fourth round.

“We were very professional, very professional. I could feel it in the first minute. Because the first few minutes we had big chances to score and the team was intense and the team was dynamic and playing well.

“Obviously, as we expected they were good with the ball, so when we give them the chance with the ball they moved the ball and they created some attacking football and for a long time the game was still open with 2-0, but I am really happy with our attitude,” Mourinho added.

“He is very good. He is very fast and the team with Marcus, we know the kind of movements we can make and with Marcus especially in the first half we were very objective and we created lots of problems to Reading,” the United boss said of Rashford.
