Mt. Kenya players: No pay, no play!

Cash-strapped Mount Kenya United captain Kelvin Thairu has warned that players will not turn for the six remaining Kenyan Premier League matches if their grievances will not be addressed by the club management.

The bottom-placed side players skipped their weekend’s match against Mathare United barely a month after they failed to honour another topflight tie against Gor Mahia owing to lack of salary payments and Thairu foresees the worst if the predicament will not be solved.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, skipper Thairu alleged that they have not been paid since January but was quick to add they’ll contemplate changing their stand if the club’s management pays part of the arrears.

According to Thairu, so dire is the situation with a number of the players already locked out of their houses for failing to pay their house rents.

“We are in a difficult situation for sure and no player wants to skip any match but again we find ourselves unable to turn up with this situation.

“Most of the players have been evicted from their houses and just imagine we have families to feed also,” he decried.

At the same time, head coach Melis Medo absolved his charges from blame terming the situation “very difficult”.

“I feel for my players and I cannot do anything to them even if they do not turn up to matches because this is something which is above me. It is a difficult situation and I hope it will be solved soon rather than later, he said, adding: “Mathematically we can escape relegation but the way things are it is a difficult situation.”

The relegation threatened side sit bottom of the 20-team league on 18 points, 11 points below Chemilil Sugar who occupy safe place 15th on 29 points with six rounds remaining.

The team which re-branded its name from Nakumatt FC host Sony Sugar on May 18 at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos before facing AFC Leopards on May 23 at the same venue.
