Muguna bemoans fixture glut as Gor shift focus to Napsa Stars

Gor Mahia captain Kenneth Muguna says fixture congestion in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) is taking toll on their  campaign.

Gor could not extend their winning streak against eternal rivals AFC Leopards on Sunday, battling to a 0-0 draw at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

Having kicked off the PL season late due to a push and pull between the club and the FKF over the league’s broadcast rights, coupled with the continental assignments, the record Kenyan champions have been subjected to catch-up fixtures hence the congestion.

“It is not easy for the players because we have a very short time to rest and work for the subsequent match. We however cannot focus on that, we have to keep working hard because that will not be an excuse to anyone. We have to get the best we can from those congested fixtures,” the Harambee Stars midfielder said.

Muguna, whose side were ruthlessly eliminated from the CAF Champions League (8-1) on aggregate by Algerian side CR Belouizdad, is beaming with hope their campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup will be colourful as focus shifts to the second tier continental interclub championship.

“We are done with the Mashemeji Derby; it’s already in the history. We are now directing our energies to the CAF Cup, because we want to at least make the group stage. We are confident this is possible.”

Gor will take on Zambian side Napsa Stars on February 14 in the first leg of their two matches, seeking a spot in the group stage.

K’Ogalo will, for the first time, be led in the continental stage by new coach Carols Manuel Vaz Pinto, after starting off under the tutelage of Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omolloh who was then doubling up as Posta Rangers coach.

Napsa Stars booked a spot to play Gor after drawing Mozambique’s UD Songo 1-1 away in Maputo, having registered a 0-0 stalemate in the first leg in Zambia.
