Muguna fires Gor top of KPL

Skipper Kenneth Muguna hit a second half winner as Gor Mahia FC defeated Sofapaka FC 2-1 Wednesday afternoon as the champions unseated Kakamega Homeboyz on top the Kenyan Premier League.

Lawrence Juma put Gor 1-0 up after only nine minutes and Jedinak Ameyaw Nana responded for Sofapaka to restore parity five minutes later in a blistering opening quarter-hour at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

Muguna had the final say in the 63rd minute to secure victory for Gor who thus took their points tally of the season to 41, two ahead of Homeboyz and three clear of Tusker FC with 18 rounds already played.

The Steve Pollack coached side could widen the gap to five points above second placed Homeboyz when they play their second match at hand. Gor Mahia have played 17 matches.

The eighteen-time KPL champions will next take on relegation-threatened Nzoia Sugar on February 2, at Kenyatta Stadium while Homeboyz welcome struggling Wazito at Bukhungu Stadium the same dates.

In the earlier mid-week fixture, Mathare United twice squandered leads to draw 2-2 with Zoo FC at the Kericho Green Stadium. Daniel Lual and James Kinyanjui scored for Mathare with Wilson Anekeya and Collins Neto on the score sheet for the hosts.
