Mule accuses Opwora of siphoning Sh1.8m Ingwe cash

A financial scandal is brewing at AFC Leopards after Dan Mule accused his co-chairman Matthews Opwora of siphoning Ksh1.8 million from the club’s account to refund rejected sponsors, Betway.

According to Mule who sent bank statements to Citizen to prove his sensational allegations, Opwora and his cahoots withdrew the money from Ingwe’s account to pay back part of Betway’s 10 million shillings sponsorship money they had supposedly misappropriated once the cash from their new deal with SportsPesa was received.

The 13-time league champions had to refund the Betway’s cash when the Sports Tribunal ruled in favour of SportsPesa when the betting rivals appeared before it to rule which company would be the title-sponsors of the domestic giants.

Mule further charged officials of the Tribunal were also involved in the scheme to defraud the club with Opwora denying the club lost any money as a result of the financial transfers involved when contacted.

“These are not rumors they are things that gave happened ,when were having a disagreement on who should sponsor AFC ,between Betway and SportPesa there are two officials who opened  an account and money was put there by Betway and they withdrew Sh1.8 m shillings that was not used by the club.

“After that, they have decided to use the new sponsors’ money for the club to pay for the money that the two used and as we are speaking even the tribunal chairman has signed the cheque and the money has been paid,” Mule alleged.

He then charged further; “Opwora and Maurice Osundwa opened clubs accounts for AFC Leopards and they were given Ksh10m shillings by Betway, they withdrew Ksh1.8million and we don’t know where they took it.

“When SportsPesa gave us the cash, the same individuals  brought me a cheque to sign  which I refused to but Opwora, Osundwa and the Tribunal chairman John Ohaga signed it on the 11th of March last week and it was transferred from the account.”

Opwora denied misuse of the club’s finances and opted to leave the matter to the auditors and the club’s internal structures.

“That issue is for the club’s Interim Member Committee. They are the ones who run the club. I don’t know where you are getting that story from, the issue of accounting we leave it to the auditors, they are the ones to decide if anything went wrong or not, but whoever told you that if they know, they can tell. For me, what I have told you is exactly what I know,’’ the accused co-chairman responded.

“We can’t ruin the peace at the club at the moment by over relying rumours. There is nothing wrong at the club and whoever is spreading the rumours should wait for the AGM that will be announced in due course but at the moment all is well at The Den,” he added.

Ingwe have enjoyed a good start to the 2016 SportPesa Premier League (SPL) season having won three and drawn two of the five matches played so far and they lie second on goal difference after tying on 11 points with leaders Mathare United.

The SPL has taken a two week break to allow the nation soccer team Harambee stars to prepare for the forth coming Africa cup of nations qualifier against Guinea Bissau on the March 23.
