Murunga calls for truce between KRU and senior Shujaa players

Kenya rugby 7s head coach Paul ‘Pua’ Murunga believes his team will not be relegated from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series even after a poor performance at the Sydney Sevens.

Speaking upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Australia, Murunga said though his team lacks the much needed experience they will not be relegated.

“Yes, we need experienced players in international matches like the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series but I’m confident we will not be relegated,’ charged Murunga.

However, Murunga who took over the reins from Innocent Simuyu said the team would benefit more if the Union settled their contractual dispute with the senior players as he needs them back in the team.

“We have good young players but if the officials at KRU can get us a few more experienced players we would get better results as before, because we need them in the team,” he enthused.

His sentiments were amplified by his captain Jacob Ojee who said he is confident they will not be relegated though there is a need to play better to register good results.

“We have not been having good results but I believe we are getting better and as we move forward we will get good results and avoid relegation,” noted Ojee

At the Sydney Sevens, Murunga’s charges lost to a non-core side Tonga 20-17 in the 13th place semi final after losing 19-14 to Wales in the Challenge Trophy quarterfinal match, to collect a point in the Sydney Sevens played over the weekend dropping to 13th place with 12 points.

Kenya will now shift focus to Las Vegas assignment in March where they’ll face USA for the second time this season, France for the fifth time and another second meeting with Argentina in Pool B.
