Murunga names Shujaa squad for Las Vegas, Vancouver

The national rugby sevens head coach Paul ‘Pau’ Murunga has made four changes to the squad that will play in the Las Vegas and Vancouver Sevens on the 1st to 3rd of March and 9th to 10th respectively.

Menengai Oilers forward Harold Anduvate and Brian Wandera of Homeboyz – who picked injuries in the Kenya Cup last weekend – have been left out while there is also no space for Mwamba Sevens captain Eliakim Kichoi and 15s player William Reeve.

The four have been replaced by Kenya Harlequins lock Herman Humwa, Charles Owino of Homeboyz, debutant Edmund Anya from Strathmore Leos and Mwamba RFC fly half Michael Agevi.

Humwa and Agevi played in the first and the second leg of the series in the Dubai and Cape Town Sevens while Anya who made debut for Simba last year in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup which doubled up as the 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifiers makes debut for Shujaa.

Agevi returns to the team for the first time since the 2014/2015 season.

KCB wingers Jacob Ojee and Vincent Onyala  , scrum half Michael Wanjala, winger Bush Mwale, flanker Brian Wandera, winger Mark Wandetto, half back Johnstone Olindi and winger Daniel Taabu all from Homeboyz alongside Kenya Harlequins  winger Cyprian Kuto played in the Hamilton and Sydney Sevens this month.

According to the Kenya Rugby Union twitter account head coach Paul Murunga says, “The work we have put in shows we have a clear chance to win against Argentina and France bearing in mind that we have played them before.”

His sentiments were echoed by Cyprian Kuto, “Our challenge heading into the Las Vegas Sevens is to win the first match which is something we are yet to do in the HSBC World Series.”

Kenya will kick off their Las Vegas campaign on 2nd March against their former head coach Mike Friday’s USA at 3:50 am before facing France whom they have played in every leg this season winning once out of four meetings at 6.25 am.

They will play their last pool match against Argentina at 11.58 pm.
