Murunga upbeat of Kenya Cup crown after weekend heroics

Menengai Cream Homeboyz head coach Paul Murunga is confident his side will go all the way and clinch this year’s Kenya Cup .

Speaking to Citizen Digital on the sidelines of Homeboyz versus Kabras game, a bullish Murunga said that they are more than ready for the challenge, adding that his top priority is to lift the coveted silverware.

“We have only managed a playoffs appearance but after this special win I am self confident we can go all the way and clinch the title . Nothing short of that,” Murunga enthused.

The Ngong road based team is now placed at position two in the 12 team log after their weekend heroics in Kakamega, where they beat Kabras 32-12.

With only three rounds remaining to the conclusion of the competition, Murunga also believes the Kenya Cup has grown in strides, reckoning that it can only get better.

“We have seen teams like Kisii Oilers coming up well, just the other day they beat Mwamba, a  worthy competitor. That was historic and it shows you how far we have a come as a rugby society,” Murunga said.

The former player turned coach also believes the formation of more grassroots rugby teams is a clear indication of talent.

“Back then we didn’t have so many teams in the top flight and nationwide leagues, but as we speak, we have over 40  rugby clubs in Kenya, and that’s a positivity we can be proud of. What needs to be done is to set up strong playing systems for them to develop and showcase their talent,” Murunga added.

By virtue of being second in the Kenya Cup log, Homeboyz have already qualified for the playoffs in March and the Paul Murunga charges are psyched up for the remaining games.

Mohammed Omollo, brought on board by Murunga from Impala Saracens during the transfer window, has been a success story for the Deejays.

Omollo has already scored three tries and bagged in 22 points for Homeboyz in the seven rounds played and his coach believes he is the future for both Kenya Simba and Shujaa if he continues with his splendid performance.

“Omollo is a great player and has come up the ranks well. From his style of play and execution os set-piece, I can assure you that he’ll  be the next Dan Carter of Kenya,” Murunga noted.
