Mururi on Sofapaka radar after Homeboyz sack

Sofapaka FC could be the next destination for tactician Mike Mururi following his shock exit from Kakamega Homeboyz where he enjoyed relative success in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL).

Mururi who led Homeboyz to finishing eighth in their top flight debut year in 2016 before going two better last year was unceremoniously sacked with former Bandari boss Paul Nkata chosen as his successor.

The 2014 KPL Coach of the Year admitted he was ‘shocked’ by the decision that came just a day after he had guided Homeboyz to a 2-0 victory over Tusker FC with the result the side’s first ever win away at the Brewers.

“Homeboyz was unknown team which was promoted to the top tier in 2013 and relegated in the same year, came back in 2015 and I guided it to finish 8th in 2016 and position 5 last year under my leadership.

“I have changed the team immensely to start performing to the levels that it wasn’t in the past and I leave the team in a better state than I found it,” the former Chemelil Sugar coach told Citizen Digital.

Mururi who has coached Homeboyz since 2016 has been unsettled in the team in the beginning of the year where he was reportedly seen overseeing training of rivals Vihiga United for two three days before re-considering his move from Homeboyz.

The conduct has been cited to be among the reasons of his axing with his assistant Peter Okidi, Technical director Alfred Imonje and medical assistant Chrispinus Mukanzi.

Cleophas ‘toto’ Shimanyula, the club Chairman, has said Mururi had his mind elsewhere, hence the future was not guaranteed.

“I want a technical bench which will be able to help the team perform rather than having people who are always warning of moving. We had to be proactive in this,” Shimanyula said.

In the absolute overhaul spirit, a new team doctor is set to be named by on Wednesday after intense interview, according to Shimanyula.
