Musingu, Kakamega and Tigoi reign supreme at Western school games

Musingu High School retained the boys’ hockey title by defeating rivals Friends School Kamusinga 1-0 in eight seconds of added time after the match had ended in a 1-1 draw in normal time at the latter’s school ground.

The defending champions were the first one to score in the first half through Richard Njuki after being awarded a  short corner to take the lead at halftime.

The host came back in the second half with more aggression with the likes of Alex Taiswa and Emmanuel Wiswa being a constant threat to the Musingu defence.

With ten minutes played into the second half, Emmanuel Wiswa scored the equalizer.

With the roaring home crowd behind the host team, Musingu continued to press on with danger man Samuel Olang missing two open chances from t short corner that their opponents conceded.

The match went to eight seconds and the twelve-time champions missed all the five chances as Musingu scored one through Samuel Olang to retain the title.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the champions head coach Mike Malungu expressed confidence of putting a great performance at the nationals set for next month.

“We must be prepared for tougher opponents at the national level; that means working even harder and remaining disciplined. There is no time to rest; the preparations begin immediately,” a calm Malungu said.

In the girl’s category, Tigoi Girls from Vihiga County defeated last year’s champions Misikhu Girls 1-0 to book a national slot.

Meanwhile, defending champions Kakamega High School retained the title in rugby 15s, beating their arch-rivals St Peters Mumias 6-3.

In an interview with Citizen Digital after the narrow win, Kakamega head coach Amos Wamanga said they knew what would come from their opponent and planned for it.

“We have played them in a couple of tournaments and we knew how tough they were, so we had to capitalize on the few chances that we created,” Wamanga said.

There were new champions in boys and girls basketball after defending champions Tigoi Girls lost to Butere from Kakamega County  59-57 while last year finalist Sigalame from Busia County thumped Mukumu 86-61.

In handball, Kimilili Boys reclaimed the title they won in 2016, beating last year’s champions Mukumu Boys 19-18, while Moi Girls Kamusinga retained their title with a 14-11 win over Mukumu Girls.
