Musonye: Kenya Cecafa withdrawal claims malicious

Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Secretary General Nicholas Musonye insisted Friday that Kenya is still on course to host the 2016 Senior Challenge Cup in late November.

Speaking to Citizen Digital Musonye termed reports in Ugandan press the country had withdrawn from hosting the competition as malicious saying they could jeopardize preparations for the tournament.

Kenya is also preparing to host the Cecafa Senior Club Championships (Kagame Cup) in December.

“We are still discussing with sponsors and we are almost concluding by Monday. It is scaring even to the sponsors when somebody says Kenya has pulled out.

“What we agreed with Kenya is that we get sponsors and that is what I’m doing, you know it is not easy,” Musonye clarified.

The Kagame Cup was initially scheduled to be held in Tanzania in June but the country requested not to host the competition citing congested league fixtures.

Uganda are the current Senior Challenge titleholders after defeating Rwanda in the finals of the 2015 hosted in Ethiopia with Azam FC of Tanzania beating Gor Mahia to the Kagame Cup.
