Mutharimi shines as Igembe lift Kitui title

Captain Elias Mutharimi stole the show as Igembe Boys High School defeated ABC Muviti High School 29-5 to be crowned Eastern Region Rugby champions in Kitui.

Mutharimi put up a stellar show with five tries as he carried his side into the Nationals, completing a dominant unbeaten run at the Regional competition.

Former champions Kangaru High, who were heavy favourites to lift the title, finished second runners-up after claiming a 17-0 win over Kiriani in the third-place play-offs.

Day one of the games Igembe won it’s first game against Katwanya High school with a 14-7 slim margin before a 42-7 convicingly win over hosts Kitui Boys to book a quarterfinals spot.

Kangaru head coach Ben Mwendwa was hopeful they will bounce back despite the setback.

My boys have worked tirelessly hard but unfortunately luck was not on our side this year,all is left is to go back to the drawing book and correct on our mistakes Mwendwa said.

Mutharimi clinched the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and Most Promising Player for his splendid performances.

Both Igembe and Muviti will play at the Nationals level to be held in Eldoret during the April holiday’s.
