Mwamba boss Wambua targets first Kenya Cup win

Mwamba RFC head coach Kevin Wambua will be chasing his first win of the new campaign when his team play host to Western Bulls in a Kenya Cup match day four clash at the Nairobi Railway Club on Saturday.

Wambua who is also the national women’s sevens team Lionesses head coach took over from John Mbai as Mwamba’s tactician and he says things have not been easy for him since he started his tenure.

“It hasn’t been easy since I didn’t have pre-season with the boys because I only had them for only two weeks. It is still is work in progress because I’m changing a few things and structures on how I want us to play in attack and defense,” Wambua told Citizen Digital.

Wambua has lost the opening three games 20-11 to defending champions Kabras Sugar, 27-24 to 2015 champions KCB and 26-11 to 2014 Champions Top Fry Nakuru in a difficult start to the campaign against the big boys.

“If you look at how we’ve been playing in the last two games, losing by three points to KCB and going away to Kabras and losing by nine, its just a matter of lapses in decision making and little bit of concentration that is letting us down,” the tactacian admitted.

He believes they are making a progress following the defeats that have left them ninth place with two points, one ahead of Mean Machine and Strathmore Leos as Blak Blad round the standings on zero.

On Saturday Mwamba take on a Bulls side they beat 36-10 when they last met in February but its the team affectionately known as Kulabu who want more since their opponents have victory under their belts having crushed Machines 23-5.

“Bulls are always tough and we have to get there physically. We have been working on that and the last two games have been very physical and I’m pretty sure it will help us with momentum. Once we contain them physically and we play to our structures we’ll have a shot at the end of the game,” the Mwamba boss emphasised.

With the National team players skipping training for the opening legs of the HSBC season in Dubai,Shujaa assistant captain Collins Injera is set to start for Mwamba who are sweating over the fitness of fly-half and former sevens international Lavin Asego who picked up an injury in the defeat to Nakuru.

“Lavin is fine, he’s been jogging this week we just want to assist him this week and hopefully he’ll be back for the weekend’s game but we don’t want to rush him back because it’s a long season,” Wambua told.

In other matches champions Kabras will play 2014 title winners Nakuru at the Nakuru Athletic Club, Kenya Harlequins will visit Nondescipts at Jamhuri Park in Nairobi which will host a double header with the day’s opener pitting host Menengai Cream Homeboyz and Resolution Impala Saracens.
