Mwamba crash out Dala Sevens Cup

The usual suspects bagged tickets to the Main Cup quarters of the Dala Sevens as Kabeberi champions Mwamba RFC shocked the rugby fraternity and the games enthusiasts who thronged Mamboleo Grounds in Kisumu bowing out of the race for the top honours.

Mwamba reigned supreme at the Kabeberi Sevens a fortnight ago sweeping all before them including beating Menengai Oilers 27-7 in the final to lift the Main Cup but here the script went horribly wrong in the hands of Northern Suburbs who beat them 12-7 under the scorching afternoon heat in the lakeside city to leave them limping into the Challenge Trophy set for tomorrow when the curtains will come down on the two-day action.

Brian Omondi and his name sake Felix Omondi scored the tries for Suburbs while Willis Juma did the conversion. Mwamba on their part had Micheal Ogevi scoring their lone try with Tony Omondi converting but they failed to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

Mwamba, in their second round match had lost 12-19 to Impala Saracens after winning the first match 34-14 to Kisumu and needed to win their final pool match against Suburbs to salvage the hopes of advancing to the Main Cup.

Meanwhile Suburbs and Impala proceeded to the last eight, the latter topping the pool – A.

At the same time Impala versus hosts Kisumu RFC was a gallant duel, the former prevailing 12-0.

Bill Omondi was in his destructive element with wit, power and pace scoring the lone first half try as Mark Kwemoi, entrusted with the kicking duties also being spot on converting to haul the advantage to 7-0 before Omondi extended the margin scoring yet another after the interval after wriggling his way past a body of markers to touch down at the far corner.

Kwemoi this time failed to convert, sending his kick wide. Unsatisfied with his double act, Omondi made a strong case for a third try with barely a minute left but he was brought tumbling down from a flying tackle by Kisumu utility player Brian Kipngeno.

Impala Saracens will meet Masinde Muliro in tomorrow’s Main Cup quarters while Menengai Oilers will face Suburbs.

Top Fry Nakuru, on the other hand, after topping Pool C will have a crunch date with Homeboyz  as KCB collide with Nondescripts.
