Mwamba reach playoffs despite loss to Oilers

Kenyan international Billy Odhiambo scored a hat-trick but his sterling effort was insufficient to drag Mwamba RFC past Menengai Oilers who claimed a 34-24 victory at the Nakuru ASK showground on Saturday.

Tito Oduk’s charges scored four tries and converted two while Gibson Weru’s winning side scored six tries converting three plus a penalty.

Despite the loss, Kulabu made it to the play-offs after Nondiescripts lost to Kenya Harlequin 15-12.

The Nakuru-based side had the bragging rights scoring a penalty through centre Austin sikutwa.

But Kenya’s Sevens top try scorer in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Collins Injera danced around the defenders to score a try Fly half Tony Omondi converting it for a 7-3 lead.

Oilers Winger Derick Mbaire run in between the posts to score the try with Sikutwa converting it to make it 10-7.

Oilers center Austine Kibet scored a try center Sikutwa converting it to make it 17-7.

Kenya international Odhiambo scored a try in the second half making 17-12 for Kulabu.

Mwamba’s utility player Alex Aturo was sin binned allowing Flanker Rodgers Audi to score a try for Oilers with Sikutwa converting for a 24-12 lead.

Odhiambo scored Mwamba’s third try Omonde converting it to make it 24-19.

Emman Okwako scored a try for Oilers Sikutwa missing the conversion to make it 29-19.

Winger Derrick Keyoga scored a try for Oilers Sikutwa missing the conversion to make it 34-19.

Billy scored his hat trick with the conversion going wide and was unable to help his team get the greatest victory losing 34-24 at full time.
